Snackle app

design project

What is the problem I am trying to solve?

Movie goers are stuck in long lines for concessions before their film starts and that often ends up with those same movie goers missing the beginning of their movie.

My solution?

An app that allows customers to order before they arrive and pick up at the counter simply and quickly.

Initial research

From my research i found that the two biggest reasons why movie goers weren't getting concessions were 1. the price is too high and 2. the line takes too long. reasonably I can't solve pricing for movie theaters but I can make a difference in line length and wait times. From that initial work I created two user personas to represent the people I am hoping to help.

The first is Nilar who represents parents with kids going out to the movies.

The second is Carlos who represents young people with more time than money. Carlos is also the persona I used to represent those with social anxiety and sight disabilities so that I could consciously make things accessible from the start.

Getting to work

My initial designs focused on large and easy to read panels. After making the designs on paper I made digital copies in Figma.

Initial user testing, which was done in a moderated usability study with 5 participants, told me exactly where I was I going wrong. The buttons weren't big enough, the navigation wasn't intuitive and overall the design just wasn't clear enough. With these changes in mind I went back to lab and made the changes that the usability study was telling me that need to be made.

With the changes made I began to design mockup designs for the final stretch of prototyping and testing.

The final stage of usability testing made it clear that I hadn't fixed the problems I intended to. I made changes to page setup and in how I presented the options to the user. You can check out the hi-fi Prototype here if you are curious https://www.figma.com/proto/aWDdoVt0yBL1Po2e4D0XRR/UX-course-project-wireframes?node-id=185%3A693&scaling=scale-down&page-id=185%3A39&starting-point-node-id=185%3A693&show-proto-sidebar=1

Throughout the project I intended to keep a focus on accessibility. The usability studies showed me that even though I had set out with accessibility in mind, I fell short in designing it.

As I finished the project I knew there were places to improve my work and kept those in mind when starting my next project. The color palette I chose didn't work out in the end and the contrast just wasn't there. I knew that I would have to learn more to create the kind of high quality work that I was sure was possible.
